Origin and meaning of the name Doge
When we hear the word “Doge,” our minds probably take us straight to that adorable meme of a little dog with a quizzical look and funny phrases. But did you know that there is a real story behind that meme? Let’s immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of Doge and discover his origin.
Kabosu: the true protagonist
The real name behind the “Doge” meme is Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog who lived a life full of unexpected turns. In 2008, Kabosu was rescued from a dog mill by her owner, Atsuko Sato, a preschool teacher in Japan. But why “Kabosu”? The answer is curious: Atsuko chose that name in honor of a Japanese fruit that looks like a lemon and whose shape resembles Kabosu’s face. A lovely choice!
The Doge meme: a mocking look and funny phrases
In the early 2010s, the image of Kabosu with his legs crossed and that mocking look became famous on the platforms Reddit, Tumblr, and 4Chan. But what really catapulted Kabosu to fame was when two programmers created the cryptocurrency Dogecoin in 2013, using his image.
Dogecoin: the cryptocurrency with hairy legs
Dogecoin, based on the Doge meme, has had surprising success. In 2014, it reached a maximum value of $400. Although it is not as valuable as Bitcoin or Ethereum, it has been enthusiastically adopted by its community. Furthermore, in 2021, Kabosu and Dogecoin joined the world of football as sponsors of the historic English club Watford Football Club during the 2021-2022 season.
Kabosu’s Farewell
On May 24, 2024, at the age of 18, Kabosu left us. Her owner, Atsuko Sato, shared an emotional message on Instagram: “She left very calmly, as if she fell asleep while she felt the warmth of my hands caressing her.” Kabosu was, without a doubt, the happiest dog in the world, and his legacy will live on in the history of the Internet and cryptocurrencies.
