Origin and meaning of the name Henar
Henar is a Spanish girl name. Meaning “place of hay”.
The name comes from the Virgen del Hénar or Nuestra Señora del Hénar, patron saint of the municipality of Cuéllar (Segovia).
According to legend, San Jeroteo, the first bishop of Segovia, brought a wooden carving of this Virgin from the Holy Land, although current historical research has disproved this theory and affirms that it was built in the Romanesque period.
During the Muslim occupation, the image was hidden so that it would not be destroyed by the Arab troops, remaining hidden and forgotten for many years.
In the 16th century, the Virgin of Henar appeared to a shepherd and showed him the place where her figure was buried, a place on which her sanctuary was built.
